2019 Culture Story
Judges FIRST Family Award
At the 2019 Colorado FIRST LEGO League State Competition, Mission Robotics received the Judges FIRST Family Award. The judges recognized a team that understood FIRST was more than competition and embodied the idea that FIRST is family through a project dedicated to Kendrick Castillo.
People are asking me how the 2019 State Tournament went. Emotional. There was laughter and there was struggle. There was dancing and there was stressing. And through it all we stayed friends and we stayed focused on why-ever it was that God had us at the FIRST Lego League State Competition for Colorado.
Sitting in the bleachers with the largest fan base ever, tears came quickly when I heard the judges say the following words:
‘The Judges FIRST Family Award. This team shows that they understand that FIRST is more than a competition. They embody the principle that FIRST is family. They show this by dedicating their project to Kendrick Castillo.’
Of all the trophies that can be won, this blesses my heart above the rest. This is what I want my team, all of my students and every camper to understand; when you are learning with me you have become part of my family.
Yes I teach LEGO robotics, but hopefully you will remember me most for making you part of a great big family.
